Squarespace vs WordPress: Why I Recommend Squarespace for Small Business Websites
If you’re planning a new website, there’s a good chance you’ve come across two of the biggest names in website building: Squarespace and WordPress.
Both platforms can create great websites, but they’re very different when it comes to setup, maintenance and day-to-day management.
As a Squarespace website designer, I choose to build my client websites exclusively on Squarespace — and for most small businesses, there are some very good reasons why.
1. Squarespace Is Much Easier to Manage
One of the biggest advantages of Squarespace is how user-friendly it is.
Once your website has been built, you don’t need to be particularly technical to make simple updates yourself. You can change text, upload photos, add blog posts, update services and manage basic website content without needing to understand coding.
WordPress can offer a huge amount of flexibility, but that flexibility often comes with a steeper learning curve.
For a small business owner who simply wants a professional website that is easy to look after, Squarespace is usually the more straightforward option.

With Squarespace, your website hosting is built into the platform.
You don't need to research hosting companies, configure servers or worry about whether your hosting package is powerful enough for your website.
Squarespace manages the technical hosting side of things for you.
With WordPress, your website and hosting are generally separate. This gives you more control, but it also means there are more things to organise and potentially troubleshoot.
For busy business owners, having everything in one place can make life considerably easier.
3. No Constant Plugin Updates
One of the biggest differences between Squarespace and WordPress is the way additional website functionality is handled.
WordPress websites often rely heavily on plugins. Plugins can be fantastic and allow you to add almost anything imaginable to a website, but they also need to be maintained.
Plugins can require updates, become incompatible with other plugins, stop being supported or occasionally create security and performance problems.
Squarespace is a more controlled platform, with many commonly needed website features already built in.
For most standard small business websites, this means fewer moving parts and less ongoing maintenance.

Website security isn't something most small business owners want to spend their evenings thinking about.
With Squarespace, security, platform updates and much of the technical maintenance are handled behind the scenes.
WordPress itself is secure when properly maintained, but the website owner or developer is responsible for keeping WordPress, themes and plugins updated.
If updates are ignored for long periods of time, problems can occur.
Squarespace removes a lot of this responsibility from the business owner.

Squarespace has built its reputation around great design.
The platform gives designers plenty of flexibility to create modern, clean and professional websites that work beautifully across desktop, tablet and mobile devices.

This is probably one of the biggest reasons I recommend Squarespace.
Most of my clients don't want to become website developers.
They want their website to:

Generate enquiries.
Showcase their business.
Appear on Google.
And be easy to update when something changes.
Squarespace allows me to build websites that achieve those goals without leaving clients with a complicated website that requires constant technical maintenance.
Is WordPress Ever the Better Choice?
Absolutely.
WordPress is an incredibly powerful platform and can be the better option for very large websites, highly customised systems, complicated membership platforms, advanced databases or websites requiring very specialised functionality.
But most small businesses don't need that level of complexity.
If your business needs a professional brochure-style website, service website, portfolio, blog, booking website or small online store, Squarespace can be an excellent solution.
So, Which Is Better: Squarespace or WordPress?
There isn't one platform that is right for every business.
But for the majority of the small businesses I work with, I recommend Squarespace because it offers the right balance of professional design, functionality, simplicity and reliability.
You get a powerful website without needing to constantly manage hosting, plugins, security updates and technical maintenance.
And most importantly, once your website is finished, you actually have a website you can confidently manage yourself.
